Essential Oil Precautions

Because of the high potency of Essential oils diligent selection and use is necessary to obtain the desired results without harmful effects. Remember, more is not necessarily better.  Many oils may be toxic if used in excess or greater strength than recommended.  Always consult a qualified aromatherapist if there are any doubts.

Many Essential oils are contra-indicated during pregnancy and breast-feeding.  It is strongly advised to consult a qualified practitioner before use.

Never ingest oils unless under medical supervision.  Some oils can be used in food preparation. Follow recipes.

Keep away from children.

Keep away from the eyes.  If you should get any oil in your eyes dilute with vegetable oil, not water, and seek medical attention if necessary.

Some oils can adversely affect those suffering from epilepsy.  Check the properties of the oils before using.

For children, the frail and the elderly start with 1/6 (one sixth) the adult dose. For babies use 1/12 (one twelfth).

Essential oils are highly volatile (flammable). Use only in burners designed for this purpose.

Check with a practitioner before using Essential oils if you are taking homeopathic remedies.  Concentrated aromas may cancel the effects of the remedies.

It is recommended to do a patch test on the skin prior to use.  If you react to perfumes then you will probably develop an allergic reaction to Essential oils.

Some oils may damage wood surfaces.

Some citrus oils can cause abnormal pigmentation of the skin upon exposure to the sun or ultraviolet light source. Allow about 12 hours before exposure.  Bergamot is a high photosensitizer because of the bergaptene content. (We also sell bergaptene-free Bergamot oil).

Contact us if you need assistance in your selection.
